Jockey to the Fair is a "set dance" in jig time, the A part is 8 bars long and the B part is 14 bars long, both parts should be repeated.

In the dance we would distinguish the sections as an 8 bar step and 14 bar set. This is where the name "set dance" comes from.

A Set Dance, is a dance that has been choreographed to a particular piece of music. Set dances can vary in length, both the step and the set. There can be many versions of a set dance, each one from a different dancing master and all danced to the same tune. Dancers regularly dance two versions of a "set dance" back to back, which is twice through the tune.

FREE resource: I was teaching Patricia Mulholland's version of Jockey to the Fair to my weekly class in February 2020, and as the term was cut short - we all know why! I created a YouTube video teaching the steps, it has had nearly 5000 views!

It is a great beginner dance, and I have taught it to people with absolutely no prior knowledge of step dancing.  Click here to view the YouTube video, there is more information about the dance within its description.

Part of the beauty of the Irish dance tradition is that it continues to be passed on from one person to another, one generation to the next.

For those of you who are interested in learning this Old Style repertoire, come and join me in dance. Drop me a line to voice your interest and I will add you to my distribution list for further information, beginners welcome.
