Old Style Irish Step Dancing is a Living Tradition; part of the beauty of the Irish dance tradition is that it continues to be passed on from one person to the next, one generation to the next.

As an in-person workshop, this was aimed at a level 2-3 dancer (see description below regarding levels), as a home study course, you could be of a lower or higher level, working at your own speed with the videos on offer.

This relatively new choreography from Maria Monakova was composed to a popular session tune called:

  • The Butterfly, a 3 part slip jig, 9/8 rhythm

This wonderful percussive dance, has become one of my all time favourites.

Maria & Annette have never met in person, but meet at a weekly dance session of percussive dancers from all around the globe. Sharing steps and stories, and their love of dance. Watch their first joint project: here

In the summer of 2024, Annette performed this piece at:

  • The Willie Clancy Festival - Co Clare
  • Folk LT - Lithuania
  • Rencontres Musicales Irlandese - Tocane - France
  • Le Grand Bal de l'Europe - aussi / also in France

Level 3 - for those who have been dancing a while and are ready to start memorising longer and more complicated routines.

Level 2 - for those with some experience, this could be 2 or 3 terms of Annette’s beginner class, or other percussive dance forms.

Summary - you will receive:

  • accompanying notes
  • background information
  • videos of a breakdown of each step
  • videos of each step at a number of speeds
  • a video of the full routine

Annette's reputation as a teacher of traditional dance grew hugely during covid. Her online programme reached as far west as Seattle, and east to Japan - teaching to a growing community of old style dancers from all around the world. She delivered her most recent workshop to the ReJigged Festival in Halifax, Nova Scotia - October 2024.

From Elizabeth MacDonald of Rejigged:

"Thanks so much, Annette! You did a masterful job covering King of the Fairies in such a short time. Bravo!"

Between May 2020 and June 2024 Annette delivered 14 courses of dance, at 4 levels - including beginners - as well as private online classes and workshops.

Annette is currently running new initiatives in dance, in her home town of Lurgan (Co Armagh) and in Belfast (Co Antrim); as well a series of solo dance workshops in the Cobblestone in Dublin - which are repeated shortly after the online workshop.

Also available in the shop - recordings of:

  • Garden of Daisies
  • Jockey to the Fair
  • King of the Fairies
  • St Patrick's Day

Recorded and arranged by Annette - sheet music also available.
